Rocket attack on U.N. base in Mali kills peacekeeper, 2 civilians

By Andrew V. Pestano

KIDAL, Mali, March 8 (UPI) -- At least three people died and 12 were injured after about 30 rockets struck a United Nations base in the town of Kidal in northern Mali on Sunday.

The attack happened at dawn and the U.N. returned fire. Some rockets missed their intended targets. A U.N. peacekeeper died and two civilians were killed after a rocket struck a camp for Tuareg and Arab nomads.

It is unknown who is responsible for the attack. The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) took over security operations from France in 2013. MINUSMA has increased security at the base and air patrols are scheduled.

Al-Murabitoun, an al-Qaida-linked group led by an Algerian militant, recently declared that an attack on a bar that killed a French national, a Belgian security official and three Malians was a "revenge operation" against the "infidel West."
