Body camera catches attack on British officer

By Danielle Haynes

BASINGSTOKE, England, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Police in southern Britain released disturbing body camera footage of a handcuffed suspect attacking a female officer and slamming her head into the ground multiple times.

The incident happened in July in Basingstoke in the county of Hampshire after Craig Radbourne, 25, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

The released footage came from a body camera being worn by the arresting officer, Sgt. Kerry Lawrence. Radbourne can be seen sitting in the back of Lawrence's squad car, arguing with the officer.

Radbourne lashes out at Lawrence and pushes her to the ground. At this point the footage isn't clear, but a Hampshire police spokeswoman described what happened to Sky News.

"Radbourne was arrested by the officer on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. He had been placed in handcuffs and into a police car before additional units arrived," the spokeswoman said.

"However, before officers arrived, Radbourne managed to strike out at Sgt Lawrence, viciously attacking her and banging her head on the ground several times.

"He was subsequently re-arrested by other officers nearby and taken into police custody."

Once she's lying on the ground, injured, Lawrence can be heard breathing heavily and asking officers and an ambulance to "hurry up." Witnesses called police to report the attack.

Radbourne was sentenced to three years in prison for assault causing bodily harm. Lawrence recovered from her injuries and returned to full duties.

Judge Susan Evans called the attack "nothing short of sickening."
