ABUJA, Nigeria, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- At least 30 people were killed Thursday when two bombs were detonated in rapid succession in a crowded area in Jos, Nigeria.

"One would have said the causalities would be low, but since the ban on street hawking in Jos, [the area] gets crowded at night for late buying and selling," a source told Sahara Reporters.

The central Nigerian city, with a population of approximately 900,000, is home to both Christians and Muslims, and has been the site of clashes between the two groups as well as a target of Boko Haram militants, including a deadly bombing in May.

No group has yet claimed claimed responsibility for Thursday's attack.
