BRUSSELS, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- About 100,000 people took to the streets of Brussels on Thursday to protest Belgium's austerity measures.

The protest was mostly peaceful until violence flared toward the end, with some demonstrators overturning cars, throwing rocks and setting off fireworks.

Riot police deployed to the capital's Midi Station, using tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters.

At least 14 people were hospitalized, the national daily HLN.be reported.

Protesters oppose the newly installed coalition government's plans to raise the retirement age to 67 and to delay the country's next wage increase.
