BRUSSELS, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- In what appears to be a crime of opportunity, a thief broke into the Belgian prime minister's car and stole his laptop on Monday.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Elio di Rupo asserted that the theft did not put any classified information or state secrets at risk. The items stolen, he said, were "personal notes and some work documents."

The theft occurred while the prime minister was at the gym. His car, an Audi A6, was parked in the center of Brussels and was unattended while his driver made a brief visit to a nearby bookstore, according to details published by the Dutch-language daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

The unidentified thief, who has not yet been apprehended, broke a side window and gained entrance to the trunk of the car by folding down the backseat. There, he found the laptop. Other items that were stolen included a briefcase, suit, white shirt, and cellphone charger.

An investigation is underway.
