Fatal train crash outside Moscow kills at least 5 people

Rescue efforts were underway Tuesday at the scene of a train crash 37 miles outside Moscow. At least five people were killed and 25 others injured, although those numbers were expected to rise.

MOSCOW, May 20 (UPI) -- At least five people died Tuesday when a freight train and passenger train collided and derailed outside of Moscow. The death toll is expected to rise.

The accident occurred at 12:38 p.m. near Bekasovo 1 station, 37 miles south-west of Moscow, as the passenger train traveled from Moscow to Chisinau, Moldova. The impact caused portions of both trains to derail.

The interior ministry reported five deaths and 25 injuries, although rescue coordinator Vadim Andronov told Russian news agency ITAR-TASS that rescue efforts were still underway and he expected the death toll to rise.

"One of the carriages of the passenger train was crushed by the freight train wagons ... Rescuers are trying to pull out injured people being crushed by the wagon."

There was no information yet available regarding the cause of the train crash.
