MUMBAI, April 4 (UPI) -- A court in India has sentenced three men, convicted of multiple sexual assaults, to hang for their crimes.
The men were convicted of raping a photojournalist in Mumbai last year, and are also among five men sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of another woman in Mumbai in a separate incident.
The court is enforcing a new law which carries the death penalty for those convicted of multiple sexual assaults.
“There needs to be zero tolerance for such incidents. A loud and clear message needs to be sent to society,” said Judge Shalini Phansalkar Joshi at the sentencing hearing.
Both trials were fast-tracked in court and completed within seven months.
The photojournalist, 22, was raped at an abandoned textile mill where she was covering a story. A male colleague was beaten in the attack. After that case made headlines, another woman, a telephone operator, 18, came forward to report she had been assaulted a month earlier, in the same location.
