Mount Everest base camp to get a security guard

KATHMANDU, Nepal, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Nepalese officials said they will station security personnel at Mount Everest's base camp after a fight broke out last year 22,000 feet up the mountain.

The incident, which saw a Swiss and Italian climber get into a rock-throwing altercation with Sherpas laying ropes for another group of climbers, was the latest in a string of problems during the busy spring climbing season on the world's tallest peak.

Some 300 people from across the world travel to Nepal each March to attempt to scale Mount Everest. With a tight window and only a certain number of days where conditions are ripe for climbing, traffic jams have developed on the mountainside, CNN said.

Nepalese officials have reduced the amount it charges for a climbing fee from $25,000 to $10,000, causing even more people -- many of them amateur climbers -- to attempt to climb Everest.

The security officials will remain at Everest base camp and will replace the previous law enforcement group, which was stationed seven days away by foot.
