CAIRO, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- A Cairo court Thursday sentenced Mubarak-era official Anas al-Fiqqi to a year of hard labor after charges of illegal gains through abuse of power.
He also received a three-year suspended sentence and a fine of 1.8 million Egyptian pounds ($258,616), the Cairo newspaper al-Masry al-Youm reported.
Al-Fiqqi, the former information minister, illegally obtained 6.37 million Egyptian pounds ($915,213) through real estate deals, a committee formed by the country's Illegal Gains Authority determined.
He and his wife also amassed nearly 26 million Egyptian pounds ($3,735,564) legally, the committee concluded, although authorities in court contended he was unable to prove the wealth, which included luxury vehicles and additional real estate, was acquired legitimately.
Al-Fiqqi was also sentenced to seven years in jail in 2012 for awarding free broadcasting rights of Egyptian soccer matches to private satellite channels, a verdict annulled by an appeals court.
