SANAA, Yemen, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Heavily armed men staged a car bomb and gun attack on Yemen's central prison Thursday night, freeing a number of prisoners, an Interior Ministry official said.

A source at the ministry in the capital Sanaa said seven government soldiers were killed and two injured before security forces drove the attackers off, the Yemeni News Agency SABA reported.

An unknown number of prisons escaped in the coordinated attack, during which gunmen fired on several areas of the prison.

The Interior Ministry official described the attackers as "terrorists" in a statement to SABA.
