CAIRO, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Violent clashes across Egypt on the third anniversary of its revolution left 49 people dead, 247 others injured and 1,079 arrested, officials said.

Deaths during clashes between protesters and government police and soldiers Saturday were reported in Cairo, Giza, Alexandria and Minya, Ahram Online reported. Injuries were also reported in Giza, Cairo, Alexandria, Fayoum, Ismailia, Minya, Assiut and Beni Suef.

The most violent clashes took place in eastern Cairo, Ahram Online said. Some of those arrested were accused of carrying Molotov cocktails, fireworks, live ammunition and birdshot rifles.

Egypt's Interior Ministry said in a statement late Saturday that security forces prevented "the Muslim Brotherhood's terrorist plot to disrupt celebrations" by "attempting to block roads, chant hostile slogans and provoke riots."
