Toronto Mayor Rob Ford backtracks on support of legal marijuana

TORONTO, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, notoriously videotaped smoking crack, backtracked Thursday after apparently coming out in favor of decriminalizing marijuana.

Ford, in an interview with a Washington radio show, "The Sports Junkies," suggested Conservatives should favor legalizing marijuana and getting revenue from it, the Toronto Sun reported. Later in the day, he said he is not going to join any movement for decriminalization or legalization.

"I am not getting into federal issues like that," Ford said. "That's a federal issue. I am going to stick to municipal issues."

Ford admitted in August, after Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau and other Canadian politicians acknowledged past pot use, that he had smoked "a lot" of marijuana. But he denied allegations by some former staffers that he had done so in his City Hall office.

The mayor acknowledged in November he has smoked crack cocaine, saying he probably did it "in one of my drunken stupors."

Ford is running for re-election. While municipal elections in Toronto are non-partisan, he is a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.
