Political violence erupted across the nation, which appeared to add to the decision by many voters to stay home.
Ballots were cast in 147 of the 300 constituencies in 59 districts across Bangladesh. Officials said candidates in other constituencies would be declared as unopposed winners due to the boycott, Press Trust of India said.
PTI said the boycott by 18 opposition parties resulted in the sacking and firebombing of polling centers; however, the results were expected to produce a landslide victory for the ruling Awami League.
