Canadian college student attempted suicide online

GUELPH, Ontario, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A 20-year-old University of Guelph student live-streamed his attempt to kill himself by torching his dorm room, the Canadian school confirmed.

The unidentified student was hospitalized in stable condition with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after the Saturday night incident, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

The suicide attempt took place on the fourth floor of Dundas Hall and was viewed by hundreds of people who were logged in to an online chat room.

The student had posted his intentions on an anonymous message board before broadcasting his attempt to take his life live, the network said. With an online audience of 200, he set a fire in his room, turned off the lights and crawled into bed.

Guelph Vice President for Student Affairs Brenda Whiteside said the incident had deeply affected the school's students.

"Clearly, there's shock, they're upset, you know they're angry, all the emotions you can imagine, but they're really sticking together," she said.

School officials called several community meetings in the wake of the suicide attempt.

Two firefighters and two school staff were treated for smoke inhalation at a hospital and released, Whiteside said.

Damage from the fire appeared limited to the student's room, but 30 other students have been given temporary accommodation while police investigate, the CBC said.
