France sending troops to Central African Republic

PARIS, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- France is sending about 1,000 troops to the Central African Republic to support an African peacekeeping force for six months, defense officials said.

Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told French radio station Europe 1 the French troops would support an African stabilization force "for a short period period, in the range of about six months."

Central African Republic Prime Minister Nicolas Tiangaye said "serious war crimes" were being committed in the country, which saw rebels forcing President Francois Bozize to flee in March.

A transitional government has since lost control of the country, Radio France Internationale reported Tuesday.

France proposed a resolution to the U.N. Security Council authorizing the use of force to end chaos in the Central African Republic, RFI said. As part of the resolution, an arms embargo would be placed on the country.
