Berlusconi relaunches Forza Italia party

ROME, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has reformed his old party Forza Italia following a split in his center-right People of Freedom.

The split came Friday after Berlusconi called on his party to quit the coalition should he be removed from parliament over his conviction on tax fraud charges, the BBC reported.

Angelino Alfano, a PLD member in the parliament, and other party members disagreed with Berlusconi's approach and on Friday started their own center-right party.

Berlusconi said Alfano's decision "caused him a lot of pain," but said his relaunched Forza Italia and Alfano's party should be allies.

The Italian Senate will soon vote on whether or not to expel Berlusconi.
