DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A Dubai court has increased the punishment for a Filipino man who pleaded guilty to killing a former triathlete and injuring two others while driving drunk.
The 24-year-old driver, identified only as W.J., was given a one-month jail sentence in September by a Dubai traffic court and ordered to pay $53,350 in blood money to the family of the athlete, Roy Nasr, Gulf News reported Thursday.
The driver's license also was suspended for three months.
Prosecutors appealed the sentence and on Thursday the Dubai Appeal Court ordered W.J. to pay an additional $1,333 fine and banned him from driving for another three months.
The Filipino man had asked the court to clemency, urging it to release him from jail so he could settle payment of the blood money.
Nasr, a Briton and an American were riding bicycles when they were hit by W.J., who also was accused of damaging a car and the bicycles.
Court records indicate the blood money has not yet been paid.
