Online predator sentenced to two years in prison

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A 45-year-old Swedish man was sentenced to two years in prison Monday for sexually abusing teenage girls through the Internet, one of whom committed suicide.

The man was sentenced on molestation, sexual abuse and sexual exploitation charges, the Swedish news agency TT reported.

He was acquitted on a child rape charge for a sexual relationship he had with one of the girls because prosecutors could not verify the girl was less than 15 at the time of the relationship.

The investigation into the man started when a 13-year-old girl from Kumla, committed suicide in March after the man threatened to publish photos and videos of sex acts he allegedly made her perform online. After the girl's death, more girls, one as young as 11, came forward and said they posed sexually for the defendant via webcam.

The defendant was also ordered to pay each victim $770.

Prosecutors said they were pleased with the outcome of the trial.

"Overall, it's a good sentence, but it's a little low for the crime he is being punished for. The most serious crime classifications should have had a higher penalty," prosecutor Pia Asberg told the TT news agency.
