British police call on escaped prisoner to return

LONDON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- British police are calling for a convicted killer who escaped from prison to turn himself in to authorities.

Alan John Giles, 56, was convicted in 1996 of murder and kidnapping after killing 16-year-old Kevin Ricketts. Prosecutors at the time said Giles abducted Ricketts and killed him as revenge for his older sister ending her relationship with Giles, the BBC said.

Giles, of Oldbury, escaped from Hewell prison in Redditch Monday.

Chief Inspector Paul Judge called on Giles to turn himself in to police and cautioned the public he was unaware what "danger he poses." Judge said police are concerned Giles will harm himself.

He would have been eligible for parole next year, the BBC reported. Police have not said how Giles escaped from the prison.
