67 people detained at Russian LGBT rally

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Russian police arrested 67 people at a gay pride rally in St. Petersburg where gay rights activists clashed with anti-gay campaigners, officials said.

The gay pride event was scheduled to take place Saturday afternoon at St. Petersburg's Field of Mars. However, anti-gay activists showed up to the field before the rally began, RIA Novosti reported.

When gay rights activists at the field, their opponents blocked them from getting to the venue of the rally.

Police intervened, detaining a mix of LGBT activists and anti-gay campaigners.
