OSLO, Norway, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Anders Breivik, the imprisoned terrorist who killed 77 people in a 2011 attack, has received permission to take University of Oslo classes, officials said.
Breivik be allowed to take classes, but will not be officially admitted to the degree program because he lacks the necessary qualifications, The Local.no reported.
He will study from a room inside the prison, authorities said.
"Norwegian law recognizes that all detainees have the right to work and study," Karl Gustav Knutsen, a prison official where Breivik is held, said.
Ole Petter Ottersen, the university's rector, said he hopes the education will lead Breivik in a different direction.
"Having been admitted to study political science, Breivik will have to read about democracy and justice, and about how pluralism and respect for individual human rights, protection of minorities and fundamental freedoms have been instrumental for the historical development of modern Europe," he said.
Breivik killed 77 people in 2011 when he detonated a bomb under the main government building and then shot 69 people at a youth camp.
He was found criminally sane in a 2012 trial and was sentenced to 21 years in prison.
