Egyptian soldier killed in Sinai violence

CAIRO, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- An Egyptian soldier was killed and two others injured in a raid by militants on a military checkpoint in northern Sinai, the Middle East News Agency reported.

The incident occurred Monday at a checkpoint on the road leading to the al-Arish international airport, MENA, Egypt's official news agency, reported Tuesday. The Egyptian newspaper al-Masry al-Youm reported about 10 people were injured in clashes that erupted between soldiers and supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi on the road leading to the airport.

Since Morsi was forced to step down, the Egyptian army has waged a crackdown on Islamist militants operating in the Sinai area, Ahram Online said. So far, about 100 militants have been killed. Sunday Egyptian soldiers seized a number of arms caches in the Sinai, including mortar shells and machine guns, the website said.
