Iran seeks to improve midrange missiles

TEHRAN, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Iran is conducting tests to improve its medium-range missiles, Rear Adm. Gholam-Reza Khadem Biqam, deputy commander of the navy, said.

"We have gained good results from our tests on the midrange Mehrab and Ra'ad missiles in previous war games and these missiles have been mounted on Navy warships," Biqam told the semi-official Fars news agency Saturday.

"When a vessel is moving in the sea, it should be capable of defending itself against air and missile attacks or it will be destroyed ... it should be capable of defending itself against the enemy's fighter jets and missiles," he said. "In the Islamic Republic ... point-to-point defense is given vital importance."

The Navy first began test firing the Mehrab medium-range anti-radar missile in two naval exercises in January and December last year, Press TV said.
