Three NATO troops killed in Afghanistan; possibly U.S. troops

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Three NATO coalition troops -- possibly U.S. troops -- died Sunday when militants launched an attack in eastern Afghanistan, military officials said.

"Three International Security Assistance Force service members died following an enemies of Afghanistan attack in eastern Afghanistan today," a statement from the NATO-led ISAF said.

The nationalities of the three deceased soldiers was not disclosed, though reports suggest they were American, Khaama Press reported.

"It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities," the statement said.

The attack took place in Paktia province, which borders Pakistan, the BBC reported.

Sunday's attack brings the NATO death toll in Afghanistan up to 114 this year. Compared to last year's total of 402, that number has fallen sharply, mostly due to the fact that Afghan troops have taken over most of the day-to-day fighting, Stars and Stripes reported.
