Local media reported that the attack started when police were called on the men Friday night because they were making too much noise. The suspects, who had been drinking, then allegedly attacked the students, who lived nearby, because they believed the students had called the police.

One of the victims, a female student, was attacked with a glass bottle and suffered severe injuries to her face, Valls' statement said. She was transferred to a hospital in city of Bordeaux for further treatment.

Two of the three suspects have been taken into custody, the statement said.
