Census: 700,000 German apartments lack toilets

BERLIN, June 11 (UPI) -- Some 700,000 apartments in Germany lack a toilet or a bathroom, the country's first census since unification indicates.

Most of the substandard flats are in the former East Germany but the federal statistics office was surprised to learn that 1.5 percent of apartments in the Bavarian capital of Munich also lack standard sanitation, the local.de reported Tuesday.

Antiquated heating systems are also a problem with some 2.5 million German apartments using coal or wood-fired ovens to keep residents warm, the census revealed.

It found 200,000 dwellings had no heat at all for Germany's long icy winters.

The census measured the number and living conditions of Germany's population on May 9, 2011.

It revealed a drop of 1.5 million in the country's previously assumed population of 81.7 million residents.
