Russian police find stash of moonshine

MOSCOW, May 10 (UPI) -- Authorities said they found more than 300,000 bottles of moonshine in a warehouse in Moscow.

The bottles were filled with counterfeit alcohol but were labeled as well-known brands of vodka, cognac and wine, a police statement said.

The stash is worth $1 million, police said.

Authorities sent samples of the alcohol for analysis and are working to identify who made the substance.

Counterfeit alcohol has been a problem in Russia recently but the number of people who die each year from drinking illegal alcohol has declined from 45,000 in the early 2000s to about 12,000 in 2010, RIA Novosti reported.
