New first lady means savings for France

PARIS, May 4 (UPI) -- French lawmakers say the girlfriend of President Francois Hollande is costing the country only a third what the previous first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, cost.

A group of right-wing members of Parliament produced the figures this week, showing Valerie Trierweiler's staff of five costing 19,742 euros ($25,896) per month.

By comparison, Bruni-Sarkozy employed eight people for 36,448 euros ($47,810).

Radio France Internationale said a member of Parliament from Sarkozy's UMP party said on a Europe 1 interview Saturday the former president's wife had a large volume of mail and other communications to keep up with.
