Vatican: Hollande ignored those opposed to same-sex marriage

VATICAN CITY, April 25 (UPI) -- Approval of same-sex marriage by the French government was an ideological decision and ignored many citizens who oppose it, a Vatican newspaper says.

The Osservatore Romano, the official newspaper of Vatican City, said the decision by the government of President Francois Hollande had divided French society and threatened relationships, Italy's ANSA news agency reported Wednesday.

Hollande, who supports gay unions, "did not pay attention to the many voices in recent months from many sectors of French society," the newspaper charged. "And not only from Catholics."
