LONDON, April 23 (UPI) -- A local official has resigned from Britain's Conservative Party after suggesting Pakistanis do not work hard.
John Cherry, a member of the Sussex County Council, made the remark last week while objecting to a London school's plan to create a boarding academy in West Sussex, The Daily Telegraph reported. Cherry also suggested the students from the Stockwell area in London would create a "sexual volcano" in the countryside.
The Durand Academy has already purchased St. Cuthman's, a closed boarding school in Stedman.
Michael Gove, the Conservative education secretary, supports the plan.
Members of the Labor Party are also split. While Kate Hoey, a member of Parliament who represents the London district where Durand Academy is located, supports it, Margaret Hodge, the Labor head of the Commons Public Accounts Committee, has referred the case to the National Audit Office, suggesting the project will cost too much money.
