BBC comes under fire for budget

LONDON, April 19 (UPI) -- England's Foreign Affairs Committee said the BBC World Service budget is uncertain and unacceptable due to recent changes in how the funding is handled.

Foreign Office funding for the World Service will stop in April 2014, and it will be paid for from a license fee, the BBC reported.

The Foreign Affairs Committee said the World Service could not plan for the budget properly, as the change in funding was only decided a few months ago.

"We do not see how the BBC World Service can plan properly how to reflect its new priorities, pursue its new objectives or shape its output ... given the short lead-in time," the report from parliament said.

But BBC Trust officials said the transition will be smooth and regular discussions about the move have been occurring since February.

The World Service announced in October that it was going to cut 73 jobs to save $64 million.
