SUALKUCHI, India, March 30 (UPI) -- Ten people were injured during a violent protest in Sualkuchi, India, over the use of artificial silk and a curfew has been imposed, officials said Saturday.
The 2 p.m. curfew was imposed in an effort to control a possible second day of protests called by silk weavers in the town, the Press Trust of India reported.
Army personnel have been deployed to the town to patrol streets and enforce the curfew.
The Saturday demonstration, staged by weavers and local residents, turned violent when protesters took items from shops labeled "Assam silk" and burned them, alleging they were not made from genuine pure Assamese golden Muga silk and white Paat silk.
Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to put an end to the protest, officials said.
