WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Drivers in Winnipeg, Manitoba, who have dirty or obscure license plates could face steep fines, police say.
Police say anyone who fails to wipe away mud or snow from license plates can be given a $113 ticket, while those who deliberately obscure their plates will face higher fines, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.
Constable Eric Hofley says some drivers use dirt and snow to cover their license plates to beat red-light cameras.
"Officers are trained to look for that sort of thing," Hofley said in reference to deliberately obscured plates. "If you are seen to have it, they will pull you over. They will seize that item and you will be issued a ticket in excess of $200."
Nearly 200 tickets were given to people who were allegedly trying to cheat red-light cameras last year, Hofley said.
