Russia might ban movie smoking scenes

MOSCOW, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Russian lawmakers say they are considering the prohibition of showing cigarettes on television and in movies.

The proposed restrictions are among provisions that could be added to an anti-smoking bill the lower house of Parliament passed on first reading last month, RIA Novosti reported Friday.

Scenes of actors smoking would not be allowed in future movies, and existing films with smoking scenes would carry announcements about the health dangers of smoking.

The overall bill would gradually phase out smoking in public facilities, including sports stadiums and transportation systems.

About 40 percent of adult Russians are smokers.
