Greeks pessimistic about finances, future

ATHENS, Greece, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Only 22 percent of Greek households are pleased with their financial situations, a European Union survey indicates.

The average of favorable responses to the question in the 27-nation European Union's Eurobarometer is nearly three times higher than that of Greece. The survey published Thursday showed 77 percent of Greeks describe their household finances as "rather bad" or "very bad," and only 6 percent expect improvements in the coming year, the website of the Athens newspaper Kathimerini reported Friday. Asked if "things are going in the wrong direction," 88 percent of those surveyed in Greece agreed, and more than half described unemployment as the country's biggest challenge.

The data were gathered from 32,000 people Nov. 3-18.
