BURNABY, British Columbia, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- An alleged leader in a Canadian drug trafficking gang and his bodyguard were gunned down Monday morning at a hotel in British Columbia.

Police did not release the names of the victims of the shooting at the Executive Hotel in Burnaby, The Vancouver Sun reported. But the newspaper said it learned from sources they were Sukh Dhak, 28, who was on trial for conspiring to traffic in ecstasy, and Thomas Mantel, 30.

Dhak's death resembled the shooting of his brother, Gurnit, who was killed outside a Burnaby mall in October 2010. In January this year, Sandip Duhre, leader of the gang Dhak belonged to, was gunned down at another British Columbia hotel.

Police Constable Doug Spencer, who knew both the Dhak brothers, told the Sun Dhak had been looking unsuccessfully for a way out of the criminal life.

"He is getting warned every second week that people are trying to kill him. He knew. He wanted to go," Spencer said.
