VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A 10-hour standoff between a gunman and police at a five-star hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, ended with the arrest of the 28-year-old, police said.

The incident at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel began at 2:15 a.m. Monday and ended at 12:15 p.m. when police used a "flash bang" device to distract the unidentified Surrey man and shot him in the leg with a plastic projectile before taking him into custody, The Vancouver Sun reported.

It wasn't clear why the man walked into the hotel lobby and brandished a handgun before heading to the third floor where meeting rooms are located.
