OTTAWA, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Officials say they will heed the call for an inquiry by the parents of an Ottawa teenager killed in a shop class explosion.

Eric Leighton, 18, was cutting into a metal drum with a cutting torch on May 26, 2011, when the blast killed him and injured several others, including his teacher at Mother Teresa Catholic High School in Ottawa. Leighton was turning the metal drum into a barbecue.

The inquiry will examine what caused the explosion and make recommendations for how to avoid future accidents in such situations, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.
