TEHRAN, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- The head of Iran's navy said no regional decisions can be made without considering the role of Iran, emphasizing its importance in the Gulf of Aden.

Stressing Iran's significant role and power in the region, navy commander Rear Adm. Habibollah Sayyari said, although his country's military doctrine is defensive in nature, the Iranian navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the gulf since 2008, when Somali pirates hijacked an Iranian-chartered cargo ship off the coast of Yemen, the state-run Fars news agency reported Friday.
