Taliban attack Afghan police

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Heavy clashes broke out in Afghanistan Wednesday between police and Taliban militants in eastern Nuristan province, provincial authorities said.

Security chief Ghulamullah Nuristani told Khaama Press a prominent Taliban leader along with eight other militants were killed during the fighting along with at least one Afghan police officer.

The clashes began after more than 1,000 Taliban militants attacked Afghan police forces in government controlled areas, Nuristani said.

He accused Pakistan's intelligence service of supporting the militants who carried out the attack.
