The soldier killed in the confrontation was identified as Staff Sgt. Netanel Moshiashvili, 21, of Ashkelon.

"Due to the fast response by the force, a larger terrorist attack in the area was thwarted," said Col. Tal Hermoni, commander of the Gaza Division's Southern Brigade. "We are in a state of constant fighting and our mission is to protect the residents, and we do that with resolve and determination."

Also Friday, Israel's Army Radio reported the military hit several targets in southern Gaza. Palestinian sources said three people were injured in the attack.

The Post reported Palestinians fired mortar shells toward the Gaza-Israel border and two rockets into the Eshkol Regional Council Friday. No injuries or damages were reported.
