BAMAKO, Mali, May 22 (UPI) -- Mali's interim president, Dioncounda Traore, was treated and released from a hospital for injuries he received during an attack, government officials said.
Traore's chief of staff said the leader's life is not in danger, but the extent of his injuries from Monday's attack was not released, Voice of America reported Tuesday.
Protesters stormed the presidential palace in Bamako and attacked Traore Monday, a day after the Economic Community of West African States and Mali's military junta agreed he would serve as interim president beyond Tuesday.
His chief of staff told the VOA that protesters at the palace demanding Traore's resignation overpowered the guards and forced their way into the building, where they attacked Traore in his office.
Mali has been in a political upheaval since military officers seized power in a coup March 22, deposing the country's longtime president, Amadou Toumani Toure. Traore was installed as an interim leader last month after coup leaders were pressured by the regional economic bloc to restore constitutional order.
The deal struck Sunday called for Traore to remain in office until the country holds elections and restores full civilian rule and the bloc to agree to recognize the coup's military leader, Capt. Amadou Sanogo, as a former head of state.
