Man gets 10 months for fake kidnapping

UMEA, Sweden, May 18 (UPI) -- A Swedish man was sentenced to 10 months in prison for defrauding his parents with a fake ransom demand.

The parents turned over 15,000 kronor (about $2,250) to an acquaintance of their son's who proved to be an accomplice in his extortion, thelocal.se reported. Once they had paid the money, they reported the "kidnapping" to police, leading to an investigation and their son's conviction.

Police learned the 29-year-old son had been staying with his "kidnapper" and had also racked up unpaid bills at a number of local hotels.

The local newspaper, Vasterbottenskuriren, said the son has a record of arrests for robbery and assault.

An appeals court sentenced the 52-year-old accomplice to probation.
