Clinton wants Bangladesh to succeed

DHAKA, Bangladesh, May 5 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Bangladesh Saturday, saying she wants to see the impoverished nation torn by political violence succeed.

Clinton met with Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament Dipu Moni to sign an agreement strengthening the friendship of the two countries and promising to hold annual meetings.

"We affirm our dedication to deepening dialogue in security cooperation, including in combating terrorism, violent extremism and transnational crime, such as narcotics trafficking, piracy, and trafficking in persons and arms," the agreement says.

Clinton's trip to Bangladesh was her first since visiting in 1995 as first lady, though she fondly recalled her visit, USA Today reported.

"We want to see Bangladesh succeed. This is personal for me," she said. "I remember the faces of the men and women I met in the villages," even after 17 years.

"Given the personal manner in which she has touched the hearts of the people, Hillary Clinton has been something of a household name in Bangladesh," Moni said.
