Police arrest 44 in Naples mob roundup

NAPLES, Italy, April 24 (UPI) -- Italian police said Tuesday they had arrested 44 people suspected of belonging to an underworld crime syndicate in the Naples area.

The arrests involve the Neapolitan Camorra clan and the Belforte family, based in the town of Marcianise, 19 miles north of Naples, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Tuesday.

Police said their investigation revealed a "leading role" played by the wives of Belforte clan chiefs who have been jailed under anti-Mafia laws.

The news agency reported that 250 bank accounts were frozen, and 10 million Euros ($13.2 million) in assets were seized, in the operation.
