BELGRADE, Serbia, April 11 (UPI) -- Nine people have been detained in connection with the 2008 burning of the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, police in Serbia said.
In a written statement, the U.S. Embassy said it welcomed the latest arrests but hoped the investigation would go further, Tanjug reported Wednesday.

"It is important to prosecute not only those who took part in the attack itself, but also those in power who ordered or in some other way supported this egregious violation of international law," the statement said.
The American embassy was set on fire during a demonstration Feb. 21, 2008 to protest Kosovo's declaration of independence.
