Ten migrants die in boat mishap

LAMPEDUSA, Italy, April 3 (UPI) -- Ten people died after a boat full of North African migrants got into trouble while crossing the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy, survivors said.

The survivors told the Italian news agency ANSA that their boat was about 60 miles south of the island of Lampedusa when it ran into rough waters.

They identified the dead as six Somalis and four Eritreans.

An Italian Navy ship rescued 48 of the migrants, including three pregnant women.

Last year, some 50,000 migrants fled to Italy after the civil war in Libya and the revolution in Tunisia.
