GLASGOW, Scotland, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- A young openly gay Scotsman was convicted Thursday of killing a gay schoolmate who was stabbed repeatedly in a wooded area.
Craig Roy, 19, was silent as the verdict was read, The Herald Scotland reported. Jurors in Glasgow deliberated for about 90 minutes before finding him guilty off the murder of Jack Frew, who was 16 when he was killed.
Frew's mother wept and his father whispered "rot in hell" as Roy was taken back to the cells.
During the trial, Roy said he met Frew in the woods near East Kilbride in May 2010 because the younger teen was blackmailing him for sex after they had an encounter in a bathroom at Duncanrig High School. He said he could not remember the actual killing and had brought a small vegetable knife to the meeting only to scare Frew.
Frew was stabbed repeatedly in the chest, back and neck, bleeding to death from a wound to his windpipe.
Less than a year later, Frew's uncle, Colin Ferguson, took his own life at a memorial to the teenager.
In a statement, the victim's family said after the verdict that Roy committed a "cold, calculating and planned murder," The Scotsman reported.
Roy faces a life sentence.
