Islamist group claims violence in Nigeria

KANO, Niger, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Explosions rocked the city of Kano in northern Nigeria as gunmen attacked police stations Friday, officials said.

Boko Haram, an Islamist group, in a phone call to the Daily Trust newspaper, took responsibility for the violence, CNN reported. The group has launched many recent attacks, including a Christmas Day explosion outside a Roman Catholic church on the outskirts of Abuja.

The attacks hit at least eight government facilities, CNN said. In one case, a witness said gunmen released prisoners at a police station before starting a fire there.

At least two police officers were reported killed in the city, CNN said. Other news media were reporting somewhat higher numbers of casualties.

Authorities declared a 24-hour curfew late Friday, Channels TV reported.

Channels TV confirmed one of its reporters was killed covering the violence, PM News said. The broadcaster said Enenche Akogwu, 31, was shot by gunmen as he covered an attack on a police station.
