Report: Gadhafi son owns Toronto condo

TORONTO, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The third son of the late Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi owns a luxury waterfront condominium in Toronto, the National Post reported Thursday.

The $1.65 million penthouse in a glass high-rise was legally purchased under Saadi Gadhafi's name in May 2008. Its monthly fees are up to date and being paid out of a Swiss bank account, the Post said.

That raises questions how it escaped Canadian and U.N. asset freezes that were declared in March a month after the senior Gadhafi ordered the military to kill rebels calling for an end to his regime.

The 38-year-old condo owner apparently had little political influence in his father's rule, as he played soccer professionally and visited Toronto about once a year, the report said.

Regardless of the condo, he reportedly preferred staying in hotels during his visits, the Post said.

In February, Gadhafi aides in Canada inquired about him moving to Toronto, but the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said he would be arrested on arrival.

Gadhafi reportedly hid in Libya until September before escaping to neighboring Niger.

There is an Interpol international arrest warrant out for him, the Post said.
